Every year on August 9th, South Africa commemorates National Women’s Day, a day that shines a spotlight on the courage and resilience of women, marking their indelible impact on society and history. This special day isn’t just a reflection on the past; it’s a celebration of the present and an inspiration for the future. For us at Indlovu Gin, it’s also an opportunity to toast to the trailblazing women who are shaping the craft gin industry.
National Women’s Day has its roots deeply entrenched in a pivotal moment in history—the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. These women, from diverse backgrounds, stood in unity against the apartheid pass laws that severely restricted the movement of Black individuals. Their formidable spirit and the powerful chant, “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo,” meaning “you strike a woman, you strike a rock,” echoes through the decades, reminding us of the strength and perseverance inherent in every woman.
Today, as we reflect on their legacy, we also celebrate the modern women who continue to break barriers and forge new paths. In the craft gin scene, particularly, women are no longer just participants; they are leaders, innovators, and trendsetters. They bring unique perspectives to brewing, flavour profiling and business strategies, enriching the industry with diversity and creativity.
At Indlovu Gin, we are proud to have, as one of our founders, a truly dynamic woman who is integral to every drop of gin we produce.
Raise a glass to the incredible women in your life, to the pioneers of the past, and to the leaders of tomorrow. Every sip is a recognition of their achievements and a contribution to their legacy.
As Women’s Month draws to a close, let’s toast to strength, progress and to the enduring spirit of women everywhere. Here’s to making every day a day to honour women, their achievements, and their impact on the world.
